It Gets Better

I've been watching a lot of It Gets Better videos and it got me thinking about my own experiences on the subject.

Once upon a time I had an arch-nemesis...in grade school. She hated me for unknown reasons. I was never mean to her and I was foolish enough to be her friend on the occasions that she was nice to me. Her bullying consisted of not letting me play with her or any of her friends, teasing me about my hair, my clothes, etc, and making fun of my eyes to our other friends behind my back. We went to a weekend sleep away camp when we were in first grade and it was the worst experience of my little life. Practically the minute my parents drove away she made friends with a new girl and ignored me the whole time, and not letting me join the fun. My bed was under one of the counselor's so at nighttime when they gathered us all before bed, she'd make nice so she could sit on my bed and not the floor. I spent the entire time alone wondering what all the fuss was about this camp. To me it was boring and scary with all the people I didn't know. It took me quite a few years to even want to go back. Another time, I brought my new doll to play with her and our mutual friend at church. Her and the friend had the same kind of doll which mine wasn't. The friend was all for playing together, but she wouldn't have any of it. In the end she stormed out declaring that she was going to get her brother to come punch me in the face. I believe we were in second grade at the time. She switched schools after second grade, and my school life was much more pleasant. The only time I had to interact with her was at church which had the added buffer of God thrown in.

She was probably the worst part of my childhood, and that only lasted a year or two. Heck, what with holidays and weekends thrown in, probably not even that long. It's bizarre how one person can make you feel so bad about yourself, especially as such a young child. It seems so trivial now, but I wish I could tell my little 7 year old self to forget her. And then I'd snap my fingers in a very sassy manner and give myself a book to read (which is how I spent most of my time at that age). Since we've been grown our paths have crossed (we were friends for a bit during the middle school/high school juncture) and who knows if I'll ever see her again, all I know is she has an incredibly weird, and in my opinion inappropriate, relationship with our youth pastor. I suppose it's not my place to judge since I have no idea what goes on over there, but...yea weird. Is it karma? Maybe. Although I don't think so because I'm pretty sure she's quite pleased with her life. Which is fine, to each their own.

In the meantime, I need to do some serious thinking as to what to eat today. I want to try this one kind of pizza my co-teacher bought for the students. It looked really good with spicy chicken and whole garlic cloves on it, but I didn't see where she got it from. Would it be weird to text her about pizza? I'm doing it.
